What is the O-Level Exam?
The Singapore-Cambridge GCE O-Level is the national examination taken by students at the end of Secondary 4 (or 5 for the Express stream). It is jointly administered by the Singapore Ministry of Education (MOE) and Cambridge Assessment International Education. O-Level results determine admission to Junior Colleges (JC), Polytechnics, and Institute of Technical Education (ITE).
For international students, the O-Level exam opens a direct pathway to Singapore's tertiary education system — without needing to take the AEIS exam first (for students aged 15+).
⚠️ Important: SEC Reform from 2027
📌 O-Level 2026 is the final year — replaced by SEC from 2027
The Singapore-Cambridge GCE O-Level will be offered for the last time in 2026. From 2027, it will be replaced by the new Singapore-Cambridge Secondary Education Certificate (SEC) examination. The SEC will align with the new Full Subject-Based Banding (FSBB) system. Students currently in Secondary 3 in 2025 will take the SEC in 2027 instead of O-Level. All our programmes have been updated to cover both the O-Level and SEC syllabuses.
🎯 O-Level Pathway Overview
For international students aged 15 and above, the O-Level pathway is often the most efficient route to a Singapore education:
Total pathway duration: approximately 4-5 years from O-Level to university entrance
📚 O-Level Subjects Offered
Students typically take between 6 and 8 subjects. The choice of subjects directly affects eligibility for different JC streams and polytechnic courses.
| Category | Subjects | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 📖 Languages | English, Chinese, Malay, Tamil, Higher Chinese, Higher Malay, Higher Tamil | English is compulsory. A pass in English is required for most tertiary courses. |
| 🧮 Mathematics | Elementary Mathematics (E-Math), Additional Mathematics (A-Math) | A-Math is required for most science and engineering courses. |
| 🔬 Sciences | Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Combined Science | Pure sciences offered at the 'O' level; Combined Science for broader coverage. |
| 🌍 Humanities | History, Geography, Social Studies, Combined Humanities | Social Studies is compulsory. Combined Humanities is a popular choice. |
| 💼 Business | Principles of Accounts (POA), Economics | Popular for students aiming for business-related polytechnic courses. |
| 🎨 Arts & Others | Art, Music, Design & Technology, Food & Nutrition | Less common but available for students with specific interests. |
Subject Combination Strategy
Choosing the right subject combination is critical. For JC admission, a typical combination is: English + E-Math + A-Math + a Pure Science + a Humanities subject + a second language or elective. For polytechnic admission, subject selection depends on the desired diploma course. Our academic counsellors help students design the optimal subject combination based on their target pathway.
📊 O-Level Scoring System
O-Level grades are reported in the following bands:
| Grade | Description | Grade Points (for JC admission) |
|---|---|---|
| A1 | Excellent (≥75%) | 1 point |
| A2 | Excellent (≥70%) | 2 points |
| B3 | Good (≥65%) | 3 points |
| B4 | Good (≥60%) | 4 points |
| C5 | Credit (≥55%) | 5 points |
| C6 | Credit (≥50%) | 6 points |
| D7 | Pass (≥45%) | 7 points |
| E8 | Pass (≥40%) | 8 points |
| F9 | Fail (<40%) | — |
How O-Level Scores Are Used
- JC Admission (L1R5): Uses the best 6 subjects — 1 language (L1) + 5 relevant subjects (R5). A lower score is better. Top JCs like Raffles Institution and Hwa Chong Institution typically require L1R5 ≤ 6 points.
- Polytechnic Admission (ELR2B2): English (EL) + 2 relevant subjects (R2) + 2 best subjects (B2). Each course has specific subject prerequisites.
- Bonus Points: Students from government schools with CCA (Co-Curricular Activities) and Higher Mother Tongue (HMT) may receive bonus point deductions of up to 4 points (reduced to 3 from 2028).
🌏 O-Level for International Students
International students can take the O-Level as a private candidate. This pathway is ideal for students aged 15 and above who:
- Want to enter the Singapore education system directly without going through AEIS
- Are looking for a faster route to polytechnics and universities
- Have relatively strong academic foundations but need to adapt to the English-medium exam format
Private candidates typically register through the SEAB (Singapore Examinations and Assessment Board). Registration opens in March each year for the October/November examination series. Our O-Level intensive programme specifically caters to private candidates, covering subject content, exam techniques, and study strategies.

💡 O-Level Preparation Tips
Start Early
Most international students need 12-18 months of structured preparation. Early planning allows time for subject content mastery, exam technique refinement, and multiple mock exam cycles.
Focus on English
O-Level English has a high failure rate among international students. Dedicate significant time to reading comprehension, essay writing, and oral exam preparation. Our English module targets these specific areas.
Past-Year Papers
Systematic practice with past-year O-Level papers is essential. Our extensive question bank covers 10+ years of exam papers with detailed answer explanations and examiner comments.
Subject Selection
Choose subjects that align with your strengths and target tertiary course. Our counsellors help students design subject combinations that maximise their options for both JC and polytechnic pathways.
